Join Beth Nicholls as they explore the vast universe of soulmates, friendship, and love.
The bonds that tie one human to another are delicate. There are so many dimensions and intricacies that we cannot even begin to understand. You can be bound by blood to your family. Bound by marital law to your partner. But what about the bonds that exceed these simplicities?
Soulmatism: the bond between two people, based on the knowledge of science, psychology, and folklore, that transcends other relationships.
There isn’t one hard definition for what/who your soulmate is, and not everyone believes In the phenomena - although I believe that everyone is destined to find that person in their life. For those who believe in soulmatism, it isn’t one size fits all. Your soulmate might be romantic, it may be the one you marry, or it could be your best friend, being a friendship forged in childhood or even adulthood. Or it could be your twin flame, the person who feels like a mirror of yourself. Soulmates look different for everyone, they might be romantic or platonic, or maybe you’ll find one of each. The bond is what you make of it.
Just like there not being one straight rule for the bond between soulmates, knowing you’ve found them can be different for everyone. Although usually, it’s a feeling you sense, a recognition beyond words. You just know that it is, maybe without explanation. In this big and complex universe, fictional media plays such a big role in our lives, and often I look to characters whose souls are tied to each other and watch as their relationship as soulmates unfolds.
Some of my favourite soulmates in media are (fair warning, I have finished about a total of six shows in my lifetime, so take this list with a grain of salt):
Alec Lightwood and Magnus Banes (TV series: Shadowhunters and book series: The Shadowhunters Chronicles) • romantic soulmates
Robin Buckley and Steve Harrington (TV series: Stranger Things) • platonic soulmates
Stiles Stilinski and Lydia Martin (TV series: Teen Wolf) • platonic or romantic soulmates (depends on your perspective)
Amy Santiago and Jake Peralta (TV series: Brooklyn Nine-Nine) • romantic soulmates
I found my (platonic) soulmate, and I can’t quite pinpoint the moment I considered us soulmates, but that’s how I see our relationship now, and I can’t imagine life without them. They are my twin flame, no debate is even required. Our friendship was first forged through shared interests, but we quickly realised our souls were entangled in ways so much deeper than that. We share experiences and traits, have the same passions, and hate the same things. They understand me like no one ever has before, and I wouldn’t say they are my other half, but they make me complete in a way no one else has. We are tethered together by everything but blood. I truly think we were destined to find each other, cause every trans boy needs their lesbian best friend.
The universe is pretty expansive, and humans only have one lifetime. It would be quite cruel for our souls not to intertwine with one another.
