Grapeshot: a cannon charge which consists of bits and bobs of round lead or iron balls tightly packed into clusters of three and held together by iron rings. To gunners the formation of these clusters reminded them of a bunch of grapes. When the cannon shot was fired, these clusters broke apart and spread across a wide target area.
