Macquarie University Cheerleading Club

Our club is a competitive cheerleading program. We are currently the Australian University National Grand Champions. We have 4 competitive teams: Warriors, Lady Warriors, Tomahawks and Aztecs (for beginning and advanced levels). This year we introduced the Firebirds. They are a non-competitive sideline team designed to cheer on other Macquarie University Sport teams and attend Uni Games.

What kind of events do you hold?

We have 5 competitions every year with nationals being held in the Gold Coast this year. As a club we have numerous team bonding nights with an annual pub crawl and end of year function.

If your society had a Pokémon mascot, what would it be?

Moltres.

What is the best moment you have shared as a society so far?

Last year our Warriors team become the National Grand Champions and Pinnacle winners. We now will go on to compete in Florida next year to be World Champions.

What is a cheerleader’s favourite cereal?

Cheerio’s!

Gaming and Computing Society

A compilation of gaming and computing, celebrating a worldwide-loved passion that brings people together regardless of race and background.

What kind of events do you hold?

Retro Days – old consoles and PCs playing classic games. Release parties – showcasing the latest games. Themed LANs – LAN parties with classic games (Doom, Jedi Knight). Viewing sessions of the worst video game movies, and Esports (LOL, DOTA, CSGO etc.).

If your society had a Pokémon mascot, what would it be?

Porygon (it’s made of code).

What is the best moment you have shared as a society so far?

Seeing the society grow and expand, allowing us to host bigger and better events in the future.

Tell us your best joke?

My friend told me that I play too much Pokémon, I ran away yelling ‘You don’t have enough badges to control me!!!’

Macquarie Costume Guild

We’re a society that’s all about costuming and cosplay! We enjoy sharing advice and our work, as well as constructing an open minded and welcoming community for everyone from beginners to expert cosplayers and costumers.

What kind of events do you hold?

We host learing-based events, such as workshops and interactive lectures, as well as involving guest speeches from popular cosplayers in the community. That, mixed with photoshoots, comps, and parties, ensures a great time.

If your society had a Pokémon mascot, what would it be?

Ditto! It can be anything.

Our special guests our always our favourite moments, as we get to see the product of years of hard work. That, and our hilariously fun photoshoots.

How can you tell when a lady is wearing tights?

Her ankles swell up when she farts.

Macquarie Entrepreneurship Society (MQES)

MQES inspires and empowers students to unleash their entrepreneurial potential in initiating sustainable, value-adding projects and ventures that make a positive impact in their communities.

What kind of events do you hold?

Weekly meetups, 100-word pitch competitions, speaker series, and workshops.

If your society had a Pokémon mascot, what would it be?

Charmander, because he’s a starter Pokémon that you grow into something big!

What is the best moment you have shared as a society so far?

At our last pitch competition we had seven amazing teams, pitched to our panel of judges, and our winner is now actually making his business idea a reality. His idea is called Dorm Room, and it’s a business that provides cheap furniture starter packs to international students who have just moved on-res.

Tell us your best joke?

My accountant found me so many tax deductions that I had enough money left over for bail.

Macquarie Uni Philosophical Society

We exist to provide a space where people can talk philosophy in an easy environment. We are closely affiliated with the department, and are also about developing people as philosophers.

What kind of events do you hold?

Weekly meetings, 5pm Thursdays at Ubar, guest lectures, debates and a journal!

If your society had a Pokémon mascot, what would it be?

Psyduck.

What is the best moment you have shared as a society so far?

Getting into a riotous argument over whether the colour blue was in the external world or all in our heads. Good times.

Tell us your best joke?

Descartes walks into a restaurant. Waiter asks, ‘would you like a drink before your meal?’ Descartes, a teetotaller, says, ‘I think not!’ and *poof!* he disappears.
