If you haven’t already discovered from countless O-week and MacFest displays, Macquarie University has a complete and comprehensive cheerleading scene. The Macquarie University Cheerleading Club consists of a dance ensemble and two levels of stunt teams, with skill levels ranging from stunt moves to backflips. With a record to boast about, the girls and guys achievements range from having received the highest scoring routine from last year’s cheerleading Nationals, to first place routines at this year’s first round of competitions.
The crackle of nerves, hype, anticipation and excitement in the atmosphere often leaves little room for silly things like oxygen, as athletes fly, flip and cheer. Dance girls seamlessly fuse rhythmic gymnastics, jazz and contemporary styles with a side of blood, sweat and tears in a setting so many Hollywood movies are based on.
State championships see our athletes defend their titles at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on the 7th and 8th of September. Spectator tickets are $10 a pop for an experience like no other. Think Cirque de Solei, but with people falling over.
You can find out more about the Macquarie University Cheerleading Club on their Facebook page.
