On 19 August the Central Courtyard will be bursting with yummy baked goods and cute animal ambassadors for the 2013 RSPCA Cupcake Day. The event will be hosted by the Macquarie Animal Protection Society and supported by Sweets by Sweets, the Student Sustainability Network and Macquarie University HR.  People will be able to buy both 100% plant-based and gluten-free cupcakes as well as other baked treats in an effort to raise funds for animals.

Macquarie Animal Protection Society representative, Bernadette Tuazon, says that the society  “provides opportunities for members to engage in animal protection whenever they are able to around their busy uni schedules.” Some of the activities the society undertakes include fundraising for various animal welfare organisations including the RSPCA.

With the RSPCA only receiving 3% of their funds from the government, it is events like the upcoming Cupcake Day that really make a difference to animal welfare. All of the funds raised on the day will directly go to the RSPCA and will be used to support shelters, vet hospitals, education services, community programs, and to employ inspectors to monitor animal cruelty.

To give you an idea of how the money will be used – $40 can provide a microchip to a cat or dog, $60 a warm bed to keep a puppy nice and warm, and $100 can support an injured animal in getting medical treatment.

Bernadette explains that the Macquarie Animal Protection Society also do fortnightly volunteering at the Animal Welfare League in Ingleside. On Cupcake Day, however, the society is hoping to get some animal ambassadors from the RSPCA to visit campus and spread the love.

So for those thinking of joining the society, Bernadette says “we can have a bigger impact on improving the lives of animals if we band together, keep each other informed and become engaged as mover and doers with a common purpose.” However, for those who already have a lot on their plate, Cupcake Day is the perfect opportunity to support animals whilst acquiring some yummy treats and maybe even some love and affection from a cute animal.
